A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison5/23/2023 The problem is, they resemble the work of a demon. Anyway, Rachel is called in to investigate ritual murders happening in the city. You know, she has been in so many pickles these past couple years she’ll probably never go hungry. This book just made me want to yell at Harrison to hurry her little tushie up and get the next book done because I am DYING to see what she has in store for Trent and Rachel. This is what most of us have been waiting for. Trent and Rachel are actually becoming…wait for it…friends. I love the direction this book is taking for the series overall. I actually had FUN while reading A Perfect Blood. But it can’t be done without Rachel’s blood. Pulled in to help investigate by the FIB, former witch turned day-walking demon Rachel Morgan soon realizes a horrifying truth–a would-be creator is determined to make his (or her) own demons. Ritually murdered corpses are appearing across Cincinnati, terrifying amalgams of human and other.

This book handily usurped Gone Girl as the best book I have read in the past year. You see all those other reviews talking about how it was unputdownable, and how they never believed something so cliche before this book? You know how you’re rolling your eyes right now at those comments? Stop it. But, most of all, it’s the story of how far a mother will go to vindicate the memory of a daughter whose life she couldn’t save.įans of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl will find Reconstructing Amelia just as gripping and surprising. Reconstructing Amelia is about secret first loves, old friendships, and an all-girls club steeped in tradition. Until she gets an anonymous text: She didn’t jump. And clouded as she is by her guilt and grief, it is the one she forces herself to believe. At least that’s the story Grace Hall tells Kate. And for Kate.Īn academic overachiever despondent over getting caught cheating has jumped to her death. By then it’s already too late for Amelia. But Kate’s stress over leaving work quickly turns to panic when she arrives at the school and finds it surrounded by police officers, fire trucks, and an ambulance. Amelia has been suspended, effective immediately, and Kate must come get her daughter-now. In Reconstructing Amelia, the stunning debut novel from Kimberly McCreight, Kate's in the middle of the biggest meeting of her career when she gets the telephone call from Grace Hall, her daughter’s exclusive private school in Park Slope, Brooklyn. When you get $1,000, stash it where it’s accessible in an emergency but not so easy to grab that you’ll be tempted to spend it for non-emergencies (for instance, by keeping it in your sock drawer). Above all, Mackay is a compelling storyteller, whatever his topic: haunted houses, phony relics, celebrated highwaymen, the clever guiles of fortune-tellers. In “The Slow Poisoners,” he discusses this once fashionable mode for eliminating enemies, rightly lingering over the beautiful Marquise de Brinvilliers, the murderer of her father and two brothers (as well as the inspiration for John Dickson Carr’s supreme mystery thriller “ The Burning Court”). Under “Modern Prophecies,” for instance,” Mackay surveys beliefs in the imminent end of the world. Like Robert Burton’s “ Anatomy of Melancholy,” Isaac D’Israeli’s “Curiosities of Literature” and Charles Fort’s “ The Book of the Damned,” “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds” is an encyclopedic hodgepodge, the bookish equivalent to Aladdin’s cave of wonders. Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds provides a list of history’s ridiculous schemes, fantasies, prophesies witchcraft, faith healers and more. The undoing project lewis5/21/2023 Undid lots of what psychologists, experts, doctors, economists believed in -> most prominently, experts are often wrong and humans are not rational but have systematic biases. That’s how Amos would begin: by undoing the mistakes of others. This turns out to be a very powerful way of doing social science. In the end Amos’ died before Danny and Danny received an Nobel prize.Later in their lives they “broke up” as Danny was left in Amos’ shadow. They first wrote Journals in psychology then moved into other areas such as economics.Danny and Amos were inseparable for decades spending all day together, locked up the two of the, laughing and writing a couple of sentences a day.Danny - lots of emotional Ups and Downs and doubt Amos - charming, clever and confident.First taught and met in Israeli university then both moved to the US, but kept coming back to Israel to teach and fight in wars. Both army psychologist - Kahneman developed scoring system for early recruits to predict how successful they will be.It was for me personally super interesting, as I’ve read dozens of journals co-authored by either or by both main characters - the last one being ‘Thinking Fast and Slow’. It also provides an incredible insight into Israel’s struggles post-WWII until the 90’s. It is a biography about the two psychologists and writers Daniel Kahneman (‘Danny’) and Amos Tversky. “The Undoing Project” gives lots of insights about the birth of heuristics, bias’ and behavioural psychology. |
